Duquoin Tribune, August 29, 1867:
Death of Miss Mary E. Winters
Mary Ella Winters, daughter of Christopher and Margaret Winters, was born at Mt. Palatine, Putnam County, Illinois, June 9 , 1848, and died at Du Quoin, August 26th, 1867, aged 19 years.
She possessed a mild and amiable disposition, and held a warm place in the affections of all who knew her. For several years past she had felt that she was a sinner, and that her sins were her grief and burden. During the month of January her sorrow for sin seemed to be deep, and with tears she often spoke of herself as a great sinner unworthy of the mercy of God in Christ.
She could not bear he thought of resting in a false hope, and it was not until several days after she felt some evidence of acceptance in Christ that she ventured to express publicly a hope that her sins were all forgiven.
After she felt that Christ was precious to her, she was anxious to honor him and to do what she could to build up his cause. She was baptized, and united with the Baptist Church February 3d, 1867. Her desire to meet with God's people for worship led her often to the house of prayer when others in good health feigned an excuse to stay away.
During the many months that her strength has been failing she has realized that she had but a short time to live, and while speaking cheerfully of getting well has also spoken of death as near, of the grave as free from terror, and of a happy assurance in the promises of her savior.
While a lovely daughter and affectionate sister has passed away from this world, we feel sustained by the evidence left us that the savior whom she loved has taken her to himself.
"He giveth his beloved sleep."
