One of Valley's Oldest Residents Dies At Fairview.
Mrs Mary Winterbottom Crook, 81, passed away early last Friday morning, May 2, after a long illness. She enjoyed good health until a little more than a year ago, when she started to fail in health, and gradually got worse until her death.
Funeral services were held for her in the South Ward chapel on Monday at 1:00 p.m. She was buried in the Smoot cemetery beside her husband.
Mary Winterbottom Crook was born October 18, 1861 in Derbyshire England. Her parents were Thomas Winterbottom and Betsy Sant. She came to America when she was 10 years of age and passed through all the hardships connected with pioneer life in a new country. She was married to Orson Samuel Crook June 14 at Garden City, Utah and they were later married in the temple. Mr and Mrs Crook moved to Star Valley 48 years ago and made their home in Smoot, where they lived until after her husband's death 27 years ago. Mrs Crook has spent the last 48 years in Star Valley with the exception of a few years she lived in Idaho Falls. She has been a member of the Afton South ward for the past 14 years.
She had five brothers and five sisters. Two sisters and one brother are still living, Hannah of Niles, California; Maggie Kidd of Sandy, Utah and George of Agusta, Montana. she was the mother of eight children and one adopted daughter Mary Jensen who died at the age of 14 years. Besides her own family she raised the five children of her oldest son, Sam, so she always had a large family to care for.
Her own family consisted of the following; Betsy Erickson of Fairview; Sam of San Diego, Cal. Mrs A. W. Johnson (Elizabeth) of Auburn; Mrs J.L. Bruce (Mable) of Smoot; Hyrum and Mrs Albert Olson (Helen) Salmon, Idaho;Mrs Alma Jensen (Mildred) Pocatello, Ida; and Mrs Chas. Johns (Tressie) deceased.
At the time of her death she had 61 grandchildren, 173 great grandchildren and 14 great great grandchildren.
