John was a General in the provincial forces of the British Army. He led the Massachusetts Militia in the deportation of the Acadians.
John retired from the military and entered politics. He represented Marshfield in the General Court 1757-1758 and 1761-1765. He moved to Hingham about 1766 and remained there until he died.
John died in Hingham, Plymouth county, Province of Massachusetts Bay.
