Son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Winegar who resided in Alden, New York during the war.

Richard served as a Corporal and Rifleman, U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

Richard was "Killed In Action" on Iwo Jima during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart. One week after surviving the battle of Iwo Jima, and two weeks before he was to return home, he volunteered to take a message over a hill and was shot. He also noted to his family that he had jungle rot.

His brother Gib flew to Iwo Jima to photo his grave.

His remains were later repatriated here.
