Mary Robinson Wilt and her husband Adam Wilt had five children all born in Ohio, before Adam enlisted during the Civil War. Mary's husband Adam was serving in the Union Army during the Civil War when his entire unit was captured at the Battle of Chickamugua. Adam died as a prisoner of war while being held captive at Belle Isle, Virginia.
Mary and her children then traveled by covered wagon from Ohio to Bates County, Missouri where they began farming on land that bordered the Osage River.
