Anne Jackson Brooks Willis, formerly of 6276 Linkythorn Lane, Clarksville, MD, died at Gilchrist Hospice Center on March 18, 2012.
Born in Atlanta, GA on December 8, 1918, Anne was graduated from Washington Seminary in Atlanta in 1937, from Lasell Junior College in Auburndale, MA in 1939, and from New York School of Fine and Applied Arts (Parsons) in 1941.
She married William Paul Willis, Jr. of Atlanta on December 21, 1941; they were married for 66 years, until his death in June 2008. Bill, a career U.S. Navy officer, was the first Blue commanding officer of the SSBN Sam Houston, a nuclear submarine.
In 1983, at the age of 64, Anne received a B.F.A. in Ceramics from the Columbia Visual Arts College. Trained to throw in the oriental style, she produced "one of a kind" pots, each piece standing alone in its individuality. Two of her pots are in the collection of the Washington County Fine Arts Museum in Hagerstown, MD.
As a lover of music, Anne helped create the Candlelight Concert Society in Columbia, MD, serving on the Board and contributing food and flower arrangements for many years.
But perhaps her most enduring love, besides her family and extended family members, was genealogy. She thoroughly researched the histories of her families, and could (and would) launch into a tale of kings, pirates and everyone in between, given the slightest invitation. Anne was a long-time member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, National Society of Women Descendants of the Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company, National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century, and The Huguenot Society of Maryland, among others.
Anne is survived by her son, William Paul Willis III of Skamania, WA; her daughter, Rebecca Anne Willis Gabor of New Kensington, PA; three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three nieces, Janet C. McCaa of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, Penny C. Abraham and Linda M. Abraham of Avondale Estates, GA; a nephew, Jake L. Abraham, Jr. of Horn Lake, MS; a great-niece, Amanda Edgar of Del Rio, TX; and a great-nephew, Jake L. Abraham III of Avondale Estates, GA.
A memorial service will be held at Heartlands Senior Living Village, 3004 North Ridge Road, Ellicott City, MD 21043, at 2 PM on Sunday, June 17, 2012.
A burial service at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at 2pm on Monday, June 18, 2012.
