Northampton, Feb 27 Prof Harris H Wilder, 63, professor of zoology at Smith college since 1892, died this afternoon at 4.30 at the Dickinson hospital after a short illness.
He was born in Bangor, Me, April 7, 1863, and was graduated from Amherst college in 1886. He received a degree of doctor of philosophy from the University of Freiburg, Germany in 1891.
From 1886 to 1892, except for the time of his study in Germany, he was a teacher of the sciences in the high school s of Chicago, and in the latter year was appointed the first professor of zoology at Smith college.
Prof Wilder was noted for special researches in vertebrate anatomy. In recent years he had been greatly interested in the study of fingerprints, which he extended to the entire palms and soles, though it has not been used in criminal procedure, is of large scientific value.
Prof Wilder was a member of all the leading zoological societies. He had always been known as a very inspiring teacher and a great many of his students have become prominent as teachers and investigators in zoology.
Prof Wilder in 1906 married Miss Inez Whipple, who formerly taught in the Northampton Hich school and was assistant to Prof Wilder in the zoological department at Smith when they married. She is now a professor in that department.
The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 at the home, 27 Belmont avenue.
(Springfield Daily Republican, Tuesday 28 February 1928, p1)

Note: The home was torn down in 2015 as part of the Smith College construction of the engineering building. Designed like a Mediterranean villa, it was not considered significant to save.
