Eugenia Gurnee Wilbur, "Gene," was born in 1911 in the marriage of William H. Wilbur and his wife, Candace. She was third in their eventual family of six children. Her early life was centered at the family home in the Buena Vista community, west of Tulare. Graduating from Tulare High School in 1929, she went on to spend two years at UC Berkeley. She was introduced to Roger G. Brown, a native of Lemoore, and their marriage followed. In their early life together, they were part of a farming partnership, Sturgeon and Brown, just south of Tulare. A daughter and two sons followed as their family progressed.
Gene had a lifelong association and participation in the activities of the Tulare Methodist Church -- choir, women's group activities, and church school teaching. Along the way, she and her husband gained an interest in hosing people from far away places and they developed friendships in Canada, Italy, Turkey, Denmark, Finland, Germany, India and China. Over a period of 10 years, she was "Mom" to three exchange students from Germany and "Gramsie" to three more a little later.
At the sudden passing of her husband in 1962, she chartered a new course. Enrolling at Fresno State College, she finished her college course-work and became an elementary school teacher, greatly enjoying her work and interaction with young people at Palo Verde School for more than 15 years. In retirement, she continued her active participation in her church. She touched many lives around the world and will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Brown; a daughter, Winifred; a son, David; and stillborn daughters, Robin and Kathryn. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sisters, Mary (Cecil) and Bette (Dooley) and her brothers, Bill and Bob Wilbur.
She is survived by a son, Donald, and his wife, Janet, of Tulare; granddaughter, Jennifer Ferguson and her husband, Erin; and numerous people around the world who called her "Mom." She is also survived by a sister, Bruce Flowers of San Mateo; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
