M. A. (Morrie) Whitworth, 88, died Thursday November 14, 2002 in Portland, Oregon. Morrie was born November 14, 1914 in Spokane, Washington to N. E. and Cora A Whitworth. He lived in Okanogan, Washington from 1914 until his family moved to Tacoma, Washington in 1929. After graduating from Lincoln High School in Tacoma in 1933 he returned to Okanogan until he joined the Navy in 1941. He served his country as a Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy during World War II and was discharged in 1945. Morrie returned to Pateros and owned and operated the Standard Oil Co. Wholesale Distributorship for 30 years until he retired in 1975. Mr. Whitworth was a Pateros City Councilman for 12 years. He was also a member of the Pateros Chamber Commerce for many years and a member of the American Legion. Morrie was instrumental in the acquisition and early development of Alta Lake Golf Course and an avid golfer.
Mr. Whitworth is survived by his wife of 55 years, Pearl, his daughter Jan and son-in-law Jeff Detlefsen.
No services will be held. If desired, remembrances may be made to the Pateros Fire Department.
