Emily married James Cox (1837 – 1864) in Port Huron, Michigan in 1848. Together they had Alonzo (1846), James (1848), George (1850), Charles (1852), Joseph (1854), Francis (1858), and Frederick (1863). Her husband, James, died a year after their last child was born leaving Emily with seven boys to raise.
About two years later, at age 36, Emily married John Caughell, also from Port Huron. A book written by Bob Knight states this marriage produced two more children.
The following comes from her death announcement:
FROM PORT HURON DAILY TIMES, JUNE 5, 1881:
"Caughell, at the residence of James Cox in this city, Emily J. Caughell, aged 51.
Deceased was a sister of Wm. Whiting and was a hard working industrious woman.
Funeral tomorrow afternoon at 2 o`clock from Grace Church. Friends of the family are invited to attend."
