Dr. Whitfield, or "Dr. Jim", earned his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Indiana. He was the former Chief of Staff and Chief of Obstetrics at St. Joseph Hospital. He was the first medical director at Indiana Health Center, the Medical Director of Sycamore Village for twenty-five years, the Medical Director of Windsor Estate for twenty-five years, the managing partner for Sycamore Primary Care and Sycamore Center, the local Medical Director for Spin, a physician for Kokomo Academy, the Medical Director for Haynes, and the Medical Director of Med One. He served as the Chairman of Minority Affairs Committee for the Kokomo Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the AMA, the Academy of Family Practitioners and was a board member of Gilead House. In 2011, Dr. Whitfield received the History Makers Award for Leadership from Indiana Health Center. Dr. Jim was a generous man devoted to his community and his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his children, Kristian Whitfield Harris, Holly Whitfield Drummond, and Adam Whitfield; brothers, David Whitfield and Dr. Phillip Whitfield; sister, Cheryl Whitfield; grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A public memorial service will be held on Monday, March 2, 2015 from 2 to 7 p.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene. A private funeral service for family will follow at a later date. Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
