Sandra H. Whipple, 44, of 878 Black Plain Rd., a teacher in the Woonsocket School Department for 21 years, died yesterday at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston, after a triple by-pass operation. She was the wife of Newton Y. Whipple.

Born in Woonsocket, a daughter of the late Dana S. and Lucille C. (Theroux) Hart, she lived in North Smithfield for 20 years.

Mrs. Whipple was the high school business department chairman for the past year. She was a 1965 graduate of Bryant College, and a 1974 graduate of Providence College, with a master's degree in guidance and counseling.

She was vice chairman of the North Smithfield School Committee for eight years. She was involved in the North Smithfield Youth Hockey Association and was a past member of its board of directors. She was a coach of the girls softball in the North Smithfield Little League.

Mrs. Whipple attended the Girl Scout Senior Roundup in 1959 in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was an adviser for the high school yearbook, Quiver. She was a past financial secretary of the Woonsocket Teachers Guild, and secretary of the American Federation of Teachers-Woonsocket Teachers Union.

In 1987, she was named "Citizen of the Year" by the Frehill Knights of Columbus, and was a member of the North Smithfield Band Aids.

While attending college, she worked part-time in the Woonsocket bureau of the Providence Journal Co.

Mrs. Whipple was a member of the Rhode Island Association of School Committees, and its legislative committee, the National Association of School Committees, and the Rhode Island Business Educators Association. She was a member of Slatersville Congregational Church.

Besides her husband she leaves a son, Scott N. Whipple; a daughter, Debra J. Whipple, both at home; two sisters, Judith H. Langford and Donna E. Kane, both of North Smithfield, and her step-maternal grandfather, George Superior of Burrillville.

The funeral service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Slatersville Congregational Church, On the Common. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.
