Eliza Emmaline, daughter of Robert and Mary Wharton, was born near Monmouth, Warren County, Illinois, March 6, 1851, and departed this life on Wednesday, March 23, 1928, at the age of 77 years and 23 days.

In her childhood her parents came to Mercer County and settled in Viola, (Mercer County) which has since been her home. She was united in marriage with Isaac Newton Beard in December 1870. To this union twelve children were born, four of whom have preceded her in death, Charles Edward, Della Mertice, Mary Edith and Eva Lucinda. Those who are left to mourn her passing are Ida Jane Tomlinson of Galesburg, Clara Mae Adams of Rock Island, Grace Mabel Kitzmiller of Chillicothe, George Herbert, Flora Belle Johnston and Don Wharton, all of Viola, Harold Harry of Rock Island and Howard Glen of Omaha, Nebraska. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. M. J. Morey of Clinton, Iowa.

In early life she became interested in the work of the church and united with the Methodist Episcopal church. She has been an interested and faithful member of the Ladies' Aid Society for more than 20 years. She was also an active member of the Woman's Relief Corps of the G.A.R. and was treasurer at the time of her passing.

Mrs. Beard was essentially a home woman, her home, her family and her church were her all-abiding interests and she served them devotedly. Her cheerful and smiling personality made her many friends, who with the family mourn her passing.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist Episcopal church Friday, March 30, 1928, at 2 o'clock in charge of her pastor, Rev. Edward Hardy. The service of song was by a mixed quartet, Mesdames Myrtle Curtis, and Bertha Terrey, and W. E. Nesbitt and Edward Hardy. The casket bearers were her four sons, Herbert, Don, Harold and Howard and sons-in-law Bert Kitzmiller and Lee Johnston. Interment was made in the family lot in the Viola Cemetery.

The following out of town relatives were present at the funeral: Howard Beard of Omaha, Nebr.; Mrs. Ida Tomlinson and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Long of Galesburg; Mr. and Mrs. Bert Kitzmiller of Chillicothe; Mrs. May Adams, daughter Mrs. Court Arndt and husband and two grandchildren, Dorothy and Howard McGuirk, Harold Beard of Rock Island; Mrs. M. J. Morey and daughter, Mrs. Mamie Huddleston of Clinton, Iowa and Mr. and Mrs. George Morey, of Aledo.
