LEBANON, Va. Mae Wells Ball, age 102, passed away Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, in the Russell County Medical Center. She was born at Swords Creek, and was the daughter of the late Beverly Wells and Rosa Horton Wells. She received her elementary education at the one room Pine Creek school, graduated from high school at the Baptist Mission School at Council, Va., and attended Radford State Teacher's College, Emory and Henry College, and the University of Virginia. She received her B.S. degree from Radford College. She was a retired school teacher. She began teaching at age 18 in a one room Russell County school. She taught first grade for 20 years in Russell County, 13 years in Tazewell County, two years in Williamsburg, Ky., nine years in Milford, Del., and one (her last year) in a private church school in Lincoln, Del., making a total of 45 years in all. She also taught the first "Head Start" class in Milford, during the summer of 1965. She retired in 1975, and moved from Delaware to Lebanon in 1976. She was an active member of the Lebanon Baptist Church, a member of the Russell County Historical Society, and Friends of the Library. She was also a committee member in compiling and editing Volumes I & II of "The Heritage of Russell County." She has two publications of her own: "Changing Seasons," a book of poems, and a history of the Pine Creek Union Log Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rondeau Ball Jr.; six sisters, Macie Wells, Dora Barrett, Clara Hayden, Theodosia Barrett, Pauline Elswick and Mary Rhodes; and two brothers, James Hubert Wells and Cecil Wells. Surviving are two daughters, Beverly King, and Clara French and husband, William French, all of Woodbridge, Va.; three grandchildren, Jamie, Michael, and Jennifer French; one sister, Ruth Gibson, Lynchburg, Va. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, 2011, in the Combs Funeral Service chapel with the Rev. Heath Kahlbau officiating. Committal and burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, in Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon. Those attending are requested to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery. Grandsons and relatives will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Lebanon Baptist Church, P. O.
