Richard is the son of Guy Robert Wells and Viola Brown enlisted into military service on January 19, 1943 in Portland, Oregon. He was a torpedoman's mate, third class. His service number of 8828644. His submarine, the USS Shark II was lost in the China Sea, midway between Hainan and Baski Channel, on October 24, 1944, after it was sunk by the Japanese with depth charges. The US recognizes his death date as November 8, 1945 after the Japanese confirming the sinking of the Shark II. The remains of the lost were never recovered.
