Mary Alice Thompson passed away on Sunday, June 21, in Bloomington, Indiana.

Mary was born in New Unionville on July 22, 1921, to Willoughby Wellons, a school teacher, attorney, and State Legislator, and Oma (Chitwood) Wellons, a school teacher in a one room school house. She lived most of her life in New Unionville, where her parents owned the Unionville Station grocery for many years. Her ancestry can be traced back to the original inhabitants of Monroe County.

She graduated from Unionville High School in 1939 where she was a member of the girls' basketball team. She married James F. Thompson (Jimmy) in 1942. As a young war bride stationed in Florida, she learned to cook by receiving recipes and instructions from her mother in New Unionville. She became a great cook. She and Jimmy shared a great love and were married for 58 years before his death in 2001.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two brothers, David Wellons and John Wellons.

She was retired from Sarkes Tarzian. Her most challenging but rewarding experience in life was being the care giver for Jimmy throughout his battle with Alzheimer's. She was a member of Little Union Baptist Church and was active in the church where Jimmy served as a Deacon. She was also active at the Unionville Senior Citizens Center. She loved family gatherings, church and community events, IU basketball, traveling with Jimmy and friends, and chocolate. She was an anchor to her family and she will be missed.

She is survived by daughters Jill Young of Spencer, Jan (Don) Young of Bloomington; grandchildren Greg Young of Plano, Texas, Tracy Young of Bloomington and Kelli (Greg) Southern of Bloomington; great-grandson Tristan Young and step great-grandson Benjamin Southern of Bloomington. She is also survived by nieces and nephews in several states.

Services will be held on Tuesday, June 23, at 10:30 AM at the Little Union Baptist Church with Pastor Frank Helton and Jack Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Little Union Cemetery.

Allen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
