SCHERERVILLE, Ind. - Mary Welch Boone, 72, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, surrounded by family, friends and God's love. She was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Class of 1953, in Norfolk, as well as a graduate of Norfolk State University and Indiana University. She was a longtime resident of Gary, Ind., and a Gary Community School teacher for more than 30 years.
She leaves to cherish her memory husband Charles Boone, former Gary Chief of Police; three children, Cleties (Sharon) Welch, Irene Boone-Phillips, Tiffany (Lamar) Key; six grandchildren, Jerome (Keneica) Moore, Michelle Holmes, Lucas and Gregory Phillips, Jonathan and Jaeda Key; two great-grandchildren, Kamarion Evins and Jamirah Moore; two brothers, Johnnie (Terry) Welch and Manlus (Joyce) Welch; two sisters, Evelyn Cousins and Juanita (Willie) Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins and friends.
Mary's favorite saying was "May you always love life with a passion and always have passion in your life." She had both love of life and all it holds and passion for God, her family, teaching and travel. As the songwriter says, "She is once, twice, three times time a lady."
Homegoing celebration will be held at 11 a.m. today in Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, 1548 Madison St., Gary, IN 46407, preceded by viewing from 9 to 10 a.m. Interment service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, VA 23505, by the Rev. Andre Jefferson of Bethel AME Church, Hampton. Graves Funeral Home is in charge.
