Hoyt Arnold Warsham, lovingly known as "Daddy Hoyt," was City of Gadsden Commissioner of Public Works from 1962 to 1970. He worked in public relations for the Alabama Industrial Relations Department from 1970 until his retirement in 1981. He was a WWII veteran and a member of the 131st Infantry Dixie Division. He was a past President of the Alabama/Georgia Public Works Association. He was named an honorary faculty member of Emma Sansom High School in 1963 and was later named to the Emma Sansom High Wall of Fame. He was a charter member of the Alabama City Lions Club and also of the Gadsden City Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of Dwight Masonic Lodge #550 for over 60 years and was a member of Zamora Shrine Temple for over 50 years. He was a retired LTC in the Alabama State Defense Force and was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Honor in 1989. For all of his civic accomplishments, Mr. Warsham was honored by the Alabama House of Representatives in 1990, and in 1997 City of Gadsden Mayor Steve Means proclaimed March 8, 1997 Hoyt Warsham Day. A few years prior to his death, the Gadsden City Council unanimously voted to rename the Alabama City Library in Gadsden, the Hoyt Warsham Alabama City Library, holding a dedication ceremony on December 11, 2002. At age 80, Mr. Warsham began working as a train conductor at Noccalula Falls in Gadsden, and continued through 2004...a job he truly loved. He was proud to be a citizen of Gadsden and to serve his community, and his accomplishments reflect this. Mr. Warsham was a devoted family man, who loved his family, especially his grandchildren unconditionally. He was a wonderful man who was loved by many people and those who knew him are better people because they did, even though the world is now a more dark and desolate place now that he is gone. In Pace Requiescat Daddy Hoyt, we love and miss you.
