Mrs. Wm. Adams, 65, Dies After Short Illness
Native of Germany, Was Taken Ill Christmas Day
After an illness of nine days Mrs. Emma Elisabeth Adams, wife of William H. Adams, of 400 East Fourteenth street died at 4 a.m., today from pneumonia at the age of 65 years. She had been taken ill on Christmas day with a severe cold. Monday a physician was called, but by last Wednesday pneumonia developed. Thursday she lost consciousness and since that time little hope had been extended for her recovery. All her children were present at her death including a son, Elmer of Chicago who came for a Christmas visit and who had remained since because of his mother's serious condition.
Mrs. Adams was born in Holstein, German, Oct. 30, 1862, the daughter of George and Elizabeth Warner. She was brought to Alton by her parents in the fall of 1868 when she was a child of six years, and thus had been almost a life long resident of the city. On June 24, 1880, she was united in marriage with William H. Adams in this city, who survives her. Seven children were born to this union, five of whom are living.
It is a coincidence that Mrs. Adams death occurred in the home which she occupied as a bride 47 years ago last June and where she had resided the greater part of her married life. Five years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Adams moved to a residence at Eighth and Langdon streets but after four years disposed of this property and returned to the old family home on Fourteenth street. The change was prompted by illness of Mr. Adams and the desire of their son, Joe, that they make their home with him in the family homestead.
For many years Mrs. Adams was a member of the Twelfth Street Presbyterian church. Her interests centered in her home and family and she was known as a devoted mother and kind neighbor. Her death comes as a deep shock to a wide circle to whom she had become endeared in practically a lifelong residence here.
Surviving Mrs. Adams besides her husband are three sons and two daughters. The sons are Walter E. , Elmer R. of Chicago and Joseph R. Adams; and the daughters are Mrs. Irene Maul, and Mrs. Virginia Aiken, Jr. She leaves a sister, Mrs. E. P. Kolb. There are six surviving grandchildren, Mrs. Leona Walz and Mrs. Thelma Wulfmeier and Miss Inez Adams, all of St. Louis; Mrs. Juanita Pierson of Bakersfield, Calif.; Miss Morland Adams and Homer Adams of Alton; also two great grandchildren, Patsy Jeanne Wulfmeter of St. Louis and Donaldie Dolores Pierson of Bakersfield, Calif.
The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m., Friday, with services at the Streeper funeral home conducted by the Rev. H. E. Mitchell, pastor of the Twelfth Street Presbyterian church. Burial will be in City cemetery.
