MT. AIRYŚ John E. "Jack" Wardlaw of Mt. Airy died Friday, July 27, 2007 after an extended illness.
A Celebration of Life service for Mr. Wardlaw will be held at 2 p.m. at Mt. Airy Friends Meeting, 109 W. Wilson Street, Mt. Airy on Tuesday, July 31, 2007. The family will receive friends at Mt. Airy Friends Meeting immediately following the service.
Mr. Wardlaw was born in Norfolk Va. the son of Charles H. Wardlaw and Emma Wilkes Wardlaw.
Mr. Wardlaw was the owner of Wardlaw Optical Co. for 25 years when he retired due to illness. He served honorably in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Chester and was a veteran of World War II.
Mr. Wardlaw is survived by his wife Sarah Burris Wardlaw formally of Mt. Airy and now a resident of Brookside Rehabilitation Center in Burnsville, North Carolina.
Also surviving Mr. Wardlaw is his daughter Dottie W. Salerno and husband Tommy J. Salerno of Greensboro, N.C.; two grandchildren, Julia Stockton Boyles and her husband Tim of Greensboro, N.C.; Ryan Wardlaw Irizarry and wife Shellie of Albuquerque, N.M.; and two great-granddaughters, Matilda Elizabeth Boyles and Keller Stockton Boyles.
Mr. Wardlaw's daughter Suzanne W. Bell, sisters Dottie W. Duff and Helen W. Morton preceded him in death as well as both of his parents.
Mr. Wardlaw's family expresses their deepest appreciation to the Central Continuing Care nurses, aids and staff that provided love, kindness, patience and excellent care during his extended illness. Also special thanks to Mountain Valley Hospice for their untiring care for Mr. Wardlaw and their unwavering support for the members of his family.
His family and friends will remember "Jack" lovingly, as a man with indomitable strength and character, a die hard Guilford College fan, with a gift for storytelling, who lived his life "his way."
The family requests memorials be made to Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care of Mt. Airy or made to the charity of the donor's choice.
