Obituary Notice.
Published in The Mayo News, Wednesday 13 February 2008.

North Mall, Westport.
Mrs Kathleen O'Grady, North Mall, Westport.
The death has taken place of Mrs Kathleen O'Grady, North Mall, Westport, one of the town's best-known and most popular personalities.
Kathleen was formerly Warde, daughter of the late Joss and May Warde of Ballinasloe. She was aged 86 years and was a retired businesswoman.
She was born in Ballinasloe on December 6, 1921, the eldest of eight children. As a young woman Kathleen moved to Westport in 1938 to manage the business of her uncle, Johnny Glynn, on Shop Street. Her role was a multi-purpose one and included shop-keeping, book-keeping and acting as chauffeur to her uncle. She took all these challenges in her stride and became a well-known figure in the evolving business life of Westport.
In Westport, Kathleen met her life's partner, John O'Grady. They married in 1946 and enjoyed 62 years of married life together. They moved to the North Mall where they both ran a hardware and pub business for almost 50 years. Some years ago they handed over the business to their son, Seán, and it continues to thrive.
Throughout her life, Kathleen played a central role in community affairs in Westport. For many years she was a very active member of the Irish Countrywomen's Association. She was also a member of the Westport Charismatic Society, the Westport Active Retirement Association, the Folk Group and St Mary's Church Choir.
Kathleen's recreational interests were many and varied and included reading, walking and art.
She will be very sadly missed by her husband, John O'Grady (North Mall), her son, Seán (Carnalurgan, Westport); daughters, Dorothy and Carmel (Australia), and Joan (Coolaney, Co Sligo); brother, Walter Warde (Ballinasloe); sister, Noreen Gray (Tralee); daughter-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, extended family, neighbours and a wide circle of friends. She was predeceased by brothers and sisters.
Following repose at the residence of her son, Seán, in Carnalurgan, removal took place to St Mary's Church, Westport, accompanied by a large and representative cortege which mirrored the esteem and public affection in which Kathleen was held by all who knew her.
Fr Micheál Mannion officiated at the reception ceremony and was also the principal celebrant of Kathleen's Funeral Mass. Family members read the lessons and prayers of the faithful and brought the offertory gifts to the altar. The funeral liturgy was complemented by the beautiful singing of St Mary's Church Choir.
In his homily, Fr Mannion paid tribute to Kathleen for her many Christian qualities, which she demonstrated in every aspect of her daily life. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, a good neighbour and a great supporter of a whole range of community projects in Westport. She was also a person of deep faith and was a familiar figure over the years in St Mary's Church, Westport, in the practice of that faith.
"On behalf of the priests of the parish and the wider Westport community, I extend sympathy to Kathleen's husband, John, her children and extended family on their great loss", he said.
Kathleen was laid to rest in the family plot in Aughavale Cemetery. May her gentle and caring soul have peaceful rest.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dílis.
Kathleen's Month Mind Mass will be celebrated in St Mary's Church, Westport, on Sunday, March 2, at 10.30am.
