Hazel Ward Came - SAVANNAH - Hazel Ward Came, age 91, passed away quietly at Westmoreland Nursing Center in Lake Forest, Illinois on Saturday evening February 13, 2010. Born on August 20, 1918 in Memphis, Tennessee, she was the daughter of Edward Ward and Ethel Ingalls Ward Fulmer. She graduated from The Hutchison School and attended Southwestern at Memphis, now Rhodes College and was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She married Frederick Charles Came of Newton, Massachusetts and had two sons, Frederick Charles Came, Jr. and Harry Edward Came. Frederick Came's employment, during the war, at Raytheon Corporation took the family from Boston to Providence, RI and then his job as an Industrial Engineer with Union Camp Paper Corporation led the family to the Isle of Hope near Savannah, GA in 1950 and to Mountain Lakes, NJ in 1958. After both sons had graduated from high school, Hazel and Fred moved to London, England to continue their adventure and were able to travel extensively and buy antiques by the container-load to provide stock for an antique shop in their retirement years. In 1972 they returned to Savannah and restored a wonderful home in the historic district on the corner of Gaston and Lincoln Streets and opened An English Accent antique shop in the carriage house. After Fred died in 1979 Hazel continued on with the shop for another 20 years until it was time to move north to live with her son Harry in Waukegan, Illinois. Hazel Ward Came will be remembered for being a beautiful, loving, caring wife, mother, sister, and friend. She will also be remembered for being a lady - a rare commodity these days. She volunteered for the Red Cross, PTA, and especially for the TB Association. She was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Savannah until she changed her membership to the First Presbyterian Church in Waukegan. Hazel Ward Came was preceded in death by her parents, her dear brother Col. Edward Ward, USAF Retired, and her son Frederick C. Came, Jr. She is survived by her son Harry Edward Came, her grandson Preston (Cherie) Charles Came of Naples, FL and her granddaughter Rebecca (Robert) Came Gillespie of Raleigh, NC as well as three great grandchildren, Jessica Lynn Came and Preston Tyler Came of Naples and Abigail Grace Gillespie of Raleigh. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Sharon Preston Came of Black Mountain, NC and her sister-in-law Joy Hairston Ward of Coral Gables, FL. A memorial service was held on Saturday, February 20th at 1:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 122 North Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, Waukegan, IL 60085. Officiating was Pastor David Eikenberry. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 27th at 11:00 AM at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel, at 7200 Hodgson Memorial Drive in Savannah, GA with a graveside service held immediately thereafter at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park. Officiating at both services will be her dear friend Rev. Nelle McCorkle Bordeaux. - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/savannah/obituary.aspx?n=hazel-ward-came&pid=139898859#fbLoggedOut
