Patricia Ann Ward, daughter of Mary Pattie Briggs, died of natural causes in Fairfax, VA on January 1, 2011. She was born at her grandparents' beloved "Bellefarm" in Catharpin, VA on November 25, 1929. She married John Albert Ward, Jr. in December 1946. They had five children, all of whom survive her: David Ward, of Fairfax, VA; Alyson Ward, of Wilmington, NC; Jonathan Ward, of Reston, VA; Penny Ward, of Carrboro, NC; and Diana Scheid, of Chantilly, VA. She is also survived by her sister, Marilynn Cushman, of Leesburg, VA, ten grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.
Pat lived in Washington, DC during her childhood but spent her summers at Bellefarm. She worked at the downtown Washington Woodward & Lothrop during high school, and was briefly employed by the CIG (a forerunner of the CIA). She moved with her husband and family to Japan on tours of duty in Yokohama (1953-57) and Okinawa (1965-67), where she developed a deep affection for the Japanese people and their culture.
After her retirement from the Administration Department at INOVA Fairfax Hospital in 1995, Pat was an avid participant in adult learning experiences. She took multiple art history and cultural tours of France, Italy, England, Greece, and Austria, and she was actively involved with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at George Mason. Pat was a talented quilter, a pianist, and read literature and history. She was a member of Fairfax Presbyterian Church.
There will be a visitation for family and friends at the Everly Funeral Home, 10565 Main St. in Fairfax on Sunday, January 16 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in Pat's memory be made to Fairfax Presbyterian Church, 10723 Main Street, Fairfax, VA 22030. Pat will be interred in a private ceremony at her mother's graveside at Sudley United Methodist Church, Manassas, VA.
