Jo-Ann Waltz Jacobs
March 12, 1932 - Feb. 24, 2013

Jo-Ann Waltz Jacobs, 80, of Damariscotta, passed away on Feb. 24 after a valiant battle with cancer. Jo-Ann was born on March 12, 1932 in Damariscotta, the only child of Geraldine Barstow Waltz and Perley Waltz.

Jo-Ann attended elementary school in Waldoboro and graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1950. She was salutatorian of her class. Jo-Ann began working in her father's business, Waltz Pharmacy, on Main Street in Damariscotta when it opened in 1948, eventually owning the business herself.

In August 1951, she married Winton (Winty) Jacobs of Damariscotta Mills, and they lived in England for several years while Winty was stationed there during the Korean Conflict. When they returned from England, Jo-Ann resumed working at Waltz Pharmacy where she was a fixture until her illness forced her to retire in late 2011.

Jo-Ann was a leader in the Damariscotta business community, dedicated to ensuring that downtown Damariscotta remained vibrant. She was known as a straightforward person yet her laugh was unmistakable. Jo-Ann enjoyed travel as well as simple walks in the woods with her dogs. She had an artistic sense of style in her dress and home décor, often going to arts and craft shows.

Jo-Ann was a member of the Damariscotta Baptist Church where she served in various capacities including the missionary circle and diaconate board. She also sang in the choir for many years. In recent years, Jo-Ann served two terms on the board of the Skidompha Library. She was also a member of the National Association of Soda Jerks and was known for making the best ice cream sodas in town.

Jo-Ann was recently predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Winty Jacobs.

She is survived by daughter, Christie and partner Kimberly Malone of Golden, Col.; son Dean and wife Sarah Plummer; and beloved grandsons, Benjamin and Christopher of Damariscotta.
