Clydine was born in El Cajon, Calif., on June 6, 1934, to Clyde and Reberta Walling, the third daughter of seven children. During World War II, she grew up in San Diego, Calif., where her father Clyde and mother "Bert" (a Rosie the Riveter) worked at Lockheed Manufacturing. After the war, the family moved many times with her father's job as a fireman on Southern Pacific Railroad. They moved to Dunsmuir, Calif., in 1950, then moved to Klamath Falls the same year.
She met Melvin McKay through mutual friends and they were married Jan. 6, 1951, when she was 16 years old. Her parents gave their blessing even though they said: "It will never last - a city girl and and a cowboy."
Melvin and Clydine moved to the McKay Ranch homestead on Sheepy Creek near Dorris. As a young city girl, she came to a home without electricity, but learned quickly with the help of her mother-in-law, Addie McKay. Melvin and Clydine settled into married life and raised a daughter, Terry, and three sons - Russell, Tim and Tom - through their 64 years of marriage (And they said it wouldn't last.)
Clydine was an active member of grange in Dorris, worked in the potatoes at Macdoel, and was a board member and past president for 18 years on the Butte Valley School Board. She later became a board member of the Picard Cemetery until her illness last year. She will be missed by all that knew her.
Clydine was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Reberta Walling; sisters, Shirley, Geraldine and Louise; and son, Tim.
She is survived by her husband, Melvin McKay; daughter and son-in-law, Terry and Richard Engel; sons and daughter-in-law, Russell and Carol McKay and Tom McKay; siblings, Clyde Walling, Jack Walling and Patricia Hall; seven grandchildren, Scott Flowers, Spring Cook, Dana Thompson, John McKay, Noah McKay, Travis McKay and Lucas McKay; 11 great-grandchildren, Mike Cobb, Teri Cobb, James Flowers, Julia Flowers, Gavin McKay, Kayla McKay, Braiden McKay, Annette Thompson, Hunter Thompson, Bennett McKay and Roman McKay; plus many nieces and nephews. -
