Mae Belle Wallace Powell, age 101, passed away March 20th, 2018 at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. She was a resident of Symsonia, Kentucky, where she was born and lived most of her life. Mae Belle was a graduate of Symsonia High School, and along with her twin sister, Mary Roach, she graduated from Murray State University in 1938. Known in West Kentucky as The Wallace Twins, Mary and Mae Belle were the first two women to graduate from college in their family and they were both teachers at Symsonia Middle School for 42 years. Mae Belle taught English and History, was an avid reader, and she followed current events and politics.

Mae Belle was preceded in death by her husband, Loman R. Powell, her sister, Virginia Wallace, her brother, James William Wallace, and her oldest son, Dr. James Wallace Powell, as well as her parents, Earnest and Grace Edwards Wallace. She is survived by her twin sister, Mary Belle Wallace Roach, her son David M. Powell and daughter-in-law, Amy Rose, of San Jose, California, as well as a niece, Nancy Roche and her husband Sawnie R. Aldredge, and their daughter, Anjelika Aldredge, of Nashville, Tennessee.

Mae Belle was a life-long and dedicated member of the Symsonia Methodist Church, which was founded by her great-grandmother, Martha Edwards. As a beloved school teacher, she taught hundreds of residents of Symsonia and the surrounding area to be knowledgeable, kind, and responsible citizens. Her family, friends, church family, and colleagues found her warm, empathetic, and generous. She grew up in Paducah, Kentucky and was the oldest patron of the Columbia, Theater, and the oldest member of the Community Federal Saving Bank of Benton.

During World War II, Mae Belle, along with many family members and friends, moved to Detroit, Michigan. There, she was a Rosie-the-Riveter and helped build the B 57 Marauder. She and her sister married best friends, Loman Powell and Wallace Roach, and moved back to Symsonia where she lived for the rest of her life. After the death of their husbands, the two sisters moved in together and travelled the world as far as Tahiti, Italy, and the Caribbean. Mae Belle was a person who truly lived her religious beliefs of compassion and giving, and she was widely known for her sweet nature. Mae Belle was dearly loved and she will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held at the Symsonia Methodist Church, 161 State Route 348 E, Symsonia, KY 42082 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 24th, 2018, with a funeral service following at 1 pm. Burial will be held at the Symsonia Cemetery. Donations to the Symsonia Methodist Church, PO Box 272, Symsonia, KY 42082 may be made in lieu of flowers.
