From the Omaha World Hearld Newspaper:
Frederick H. Wackerhagen just said no to self-service gas pumps at his Fred's Friendly Service station, 2901 Leavenworth St.

"It was always full service; it's still full service," daughter Sue Ann Goodman of Omaha said. "He always said he would never have self-service because his customers deserved to have the full service. They checked the oil, cleaned your windshield and checked the air pressure on your tires. There were mechanics on staff. He had lots of accounts with local businesses."

Wackerhagen died of Alzheimer's disease Sunday at Josie Harper Hospice House. He was 77.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Heafey-Heafey-Hoffmann Dworak-Cutler Chapel, 7805 West Center Road.

Wackerhagen was born in Bellevue and attended Omaha's Technical High School, where he played football.

Wackerhagen started his business in 1961. When he retired in 1999, sons Robert and Ronald, who had worked there for many years, took over the service station.

"He was called ‘Friendly Fred' because he was very personable," his daughter said.

He was active in Downtown Omaha Inc., organized cleanup campaigns in downtown for about 10 years and once ran for City Council.

Keep Omaha Beautiful recognized Wackerhagen in 1999 for organizing the annual cleanups in downtown Omaha with volunteers from Downtown Omaha Inc. and Central High School. He would make the cleanups pleasant, encourage families to involve their children and provide volunteers with refreshments and rides on Ollie the Trolley.

Wackerhagen was an active member of the Tangier Shrine Temple in Omaha and was elected potentate of the 5,000-member organization in 1986.
