Barbara Maxine Benson, 84, died Oct. 14, 2000, in Klamath Falls after a lenghty battle against cancer.

Mrs. Benson was born in North Dakota to William and Frances (Caffrey)Vrooman. She attended grade school in Napoleon and high school in Maple Falls, Wash. After graduating from high school, she went to a business college in San Jose, Calif. She married Melvin Benson, in Bellingham, Wash., in 1934.

Her husband's career caused them to move extensively and they lived in every state west of the Rocky Mountains. They also spent some time in Turkey and four years in the Phillippine Islands, where her husband died in an industrical accident in 1962. Mrs. Benson then moved to Chelan, Wash., and, in 1965, to Klamath Falls.

Among her interests was bowling and she won many trophies and receieved several achievement pins. Her highest score was 268. She also enjoyed sewing, reading, playing pinochle at the Oregon Institute of Technology Pinochle Club, and taking her afghans to the Klamath County Fair, where she won a first and third places. She was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Ladies Auxiliary, a member for 50 plus years of the Maple Leaf Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star in Bellingham, and attended the Aloha Chapter in Klamath Falls. She also was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary and a member of the Sojourners.

Suvivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Fredrick "Keith" and Norie Benson of Medford; brother, Roland Vrooman of Sumas, Wash., and a nephew, Merle Van Brocklin.

She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Markel and Buell Vrooman; sister, Inez Van Broklin,; an infant sister; nephews Fred, Terry, Duane and James Van Brocklin and Edward Vrooman.

Interment will be Golden Gate National Cemetery, with her husband Melvin Benson.
