She was the daughter of Waldo C. and Truel (Johnson) Thompson. Educated in the Council Bluffs School system, she graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1941. Attended Midland College where she was awarded her teaching certificate and obtained her BS in Education from the University of Nebraska, Omaha. She received graduate credits from the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa. She taught school in Council Bluffs for 33 years: 4 years at Second Avenue School (now Edison) and 29 years at Bloomer. All were in Kindergarten.
As a member of St. John Lutheran Church for over 60 years, she was Church Council President for 6 years, President of the Lutheran Church Women, Superintendent of Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and served on numerous committees, including the Memorial and the Iowa Synod Parish Education Committees. In addition to her service with her church, she was Past president of the Council Bluffs Association of Childhood Education, the Delta Kappa Gamma National Honorary Society, Iowa Kappa Kappa Iota, the Gamma Conclave in Council Bluffs, the City Council of Beta Sigma Phi, local Chapters of Beta Sigma Phi, and was named Beta Sigma Phi of the Year of Council Bluffs in 1951. Active in other organizations for most of her life, she was Worthy Matron of Harmony Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star in 1972 and a 50 year member. She was also a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, the Association of University Women, and the Chapter IQ of PEO.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Jack C. Thompson and his wife, Mary; her brother, COL Harry M. Thompson and his wife, Mildred; and her niece Gaiola (Thompson) McVeigh.
She is survived by her son, Kurt T. von Sternberg and his fiance, Debra; nieces, Verilee D'Amato and Jaci Patrick; nephews, Paul and Matt Thompson; 3 great nieces; 2 great nephews; and 1 great, great nephew.
