Barbara Lefkow, 81, of Bethesda, Md., formerly of Rochester, died March 21, 2008, at her home, of cancer.
Barbara Vine was born May 3, 1927, in Rochester, and graduated from Rochester High School. In 1954 she earned a degree in physical therapy from the University of Colorado. She married Michael Leahy; they were later divorced. She married Leonard Lefkow, a diplomat in the U.S. Foreign Service. The couple lived in Hong Kong; Louisville, Ky.; Israel; and Kenya before returning to the United States.
In 1983 she received a master's degree in education and human development from George Washington University and worked for several organizations, including the Visiting Nurse Association. There she specialized in treating home-bound, mostly indigent, Medicaid patients in some of the poorer areas of Washington, D.C.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Laurel Lefkow of London, England, and Leslie Lefkow of Bethesda and Amsterdam; a son, David C. "Chris" Lefkow of Bethesda; five grandchildren; and a brother, David (Mary) Vine of Rochester. A sister preceded her in death.
Private services will be held.
