Opal Derstine, 93, formerly of Merkel, died Sunday, November 21, 2010. Services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 23rd at Starbuck Funeral Home with Reverend Horace Abbott officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Opal was born December 19, 1916 in Rotan to Dr. S. C. Vick and Clara Ethel (Sprain) Vick.

She attended Noodle and Merkel public schools and Draughn's Business College.

She worked at a number of businesses including the Taylor County Tax Office for over 25 years.

Opal was a long-time member of the Merkel Central Presbyterian Church and more recently was a member of the Merkel First Methodist Church.

Survivors include 3 grandchildren, Don Derstine, Debra Derstine and Dorothy Derstine Nance, nephews and nieces, Jerry Haire, Dr. Jim Vick, Sandra Stanley, Wylene Harnes, Georgia Ann Larson and Betty Jo Pryor.

She was preceded in death by her husband W. J. "Dub" Derstine and her son, Sammy Derstine of Lubbock.
