Bette Jean Vernon, born October 25, 1938 in Columbus, OH, passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2016.

Bette is survived by her son, David (Debra) Schade; grandchildren, Joseph Hinkle, Casey Schade, Andrea (Josh) Planck, Brianne Schade, Allen (Rachel) Schade and Charles (Erika) Schade Jr.; great-grandchildren, Benjamin Schade, Joseph “JD” Hinkle, Justin Planck, Abbie Planck; sister, Becky (John) Price; nephew; Chuck (Mary) Price; and niece, Linda (Mitch) Huff.

She is preceded in death by her Husband Gene Vernon; daughter, Tava (Ed) Eldridge; son, Charles (Rick) Schade; daughter, Laura Schade; and parents, Charles McGiffin Jr. and Marietta Dawson McGiffin.

Bette loved her children and grandchildren but was most proud of her great-grandchildren. Her eyes would light up at the mention of any of them.
If you knew Bette, you know that she also had a special place in her heart for all of her rescue dogs over the years. Whether they were normal, deaf or blind, it didn’t matter to her: She loved them all.

Bette was a graduate of Linden McKinley High School. She was employed with the City of Columbus as a secretary/stenographer for many years. She was most proud of being the secretary for the Chief of Police. She retired from the Department of Development.
After retirement, Bette moved to North Carolina and Tennessee for a few years until moving back to Columbus after realizing that she wanted to be closer to family.

Per her wishes, there will be a short graveside service on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 11:00am at Pioneer Cemetery, 865 S. State St. Westerville, OH 43081 followed by the interment of her ashes next to her husband, Gene. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, contributions to Ohio Health Hospice would be greatly appreciated.
