Norfolk - Funeral services were held Wednesday May 9 at Metropolitan AME Zion Church for John T. Veal, a unique figure in Norfolk who was widely recognized because of his white silky hair.
Mr. Veal, a man never seen wearing a hat, died Saturday, May 5, at a local hospital following a lingering illness. He was the husband of Mrs. Alice Veal of 800 Summit avenue, and had been a resident of Norfolk for 60 years.
Officiating at the funeral was the Rev. J. D. Cauthon, Metropolitan Church pastor. Expressions of sympathy from the neighborhood were given by the Rev. H. H. Myers. Solos were rendered by Ivey Scott who sang, “He’ll Understand,” and Mrs. Vivian Morris singing “The Lord’s Prayer.” Acknowledgements were read by Mrs. J. D. Folk.
Survivors other than the widow are John Veal Jr., Miss Mary E. Veal, William Veal and a devoted sister-in-law, Mrs. Catherine Williams Clisby, all of New York City.
