William Laurens Van Alen Jr. was a Newport and Philadelphia socialite, a member of the famous Van Alen family, a superb athlete and a devote Christian. He was born to William Laurens Van Alen, son James L. Van Alen and his wife Margaret Post, and Elizabeth Kent. He grew up at his grandparent's estate, Wakehurst, in Newport RI. There he loved to stroll through the expansive gardens and green houses, which were taken care of by the 36 gardeners his grandmother employed.

He attended Haverford School in Haverford, PA and graduated from St. Paul's School in Concord, NH. After three years at the U.S. Naval Academy, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and won a law degree from Villanova University.

He married and had a son, which he named Luke. Once he got married, he surprised the entire family by moving from Newport RI, where his ancestors had lived for over 100 years, to Philadelphia. In Philadelphia he became a prominent socialite and entertained very frequently at his mansion there.

Bill clerked for Chief Justice Bell of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, practiced law and competed in many sports, winning championships in court tennis, lawn tennis and golf. He was also a member of the Seminole, Pine Valley and Gulph Mills Golf Clubs and the State in Schuylkill.

When his grandmother died in 1969, he inherited a cash bequest of $500,000 and 25% of his grandmother's stock, which produced dividends of up to $1,000 a day. She also left Bill several pieces of antique furniture, paintings and statuary. Bill's aunt, uncle and father decided to sell Wakehurst and auction off it's contents. The family took some sentimental pieces from Wakehurst and other valuable pieces before the sellers came.

Bill managed the fortunes he had been left by his grandmother and father well, netting a net worth of over $100 million on his retirement in 2010. He died that very same year. (Bio By Tyler Hughes)
