Violet "Vollie" Hagen, age 94, of Hayward, WI passed away on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at the Hayward Nursing Home.

Violet was born on May 13, 1912 in Balaton, MN, a small farming community in the southwest corner of the state. She traveled to Hayward with her parents, Carl and Alice (Morgan) Vallem and six of their children when Violet was seven years old. The family made their home on a piece of land that Violet's father purchased two miles out of Hayward off Highway B for $2.00 an acre. He built a house on it and grubbed the tree stumps in order to plant his crops. "Vollie" and her siblings attended Wheeler Elementary, a one-room schoolhouse, as well as Hayward High School. Vollie lived in a time when Americans were still using horse and wagon much of the time, when there were poorhouses, and where the wolves howled in the woods at night.

In 1931, Vollie married Harry Swenson, a local barber whose business was located in the Walker Hotel. Together they had two children: Bette Rae and the late Roger Hagen. Harry passed away in 1954. In 1958, Vollie married John Hagen, a mayor of Hayward for several years and co-owner of Hagen Appliance, then located across from Hayward Dairy. In 1964, Vollie joined John in the appliance store with a corner devoted to gifts. Four years later, Vollie moved her giftware to a shop on Main Street where she and John ran "Vollie's Gifts" well into the 1980's. This store was Vollie's goal through most of her life. Vollie's daughter remembers many a bedtime story that started out, "What if we had a store . . ." That Vollie achieved this goal gave her enormous satisfaction.

Vollie was involved in many community activities, enjoyed her home and garden as well as traveling to visit family members in California, Utah, Florida, Massachusetts, Illinois and Minnesota. She found great comfort in the church.

Vollie is survived by her daughter Bette Rae Swenson Preus; grandchildren Karin (Larry Marcus) Preus and Michael (Karen) Preus; great grandchildren Jayden and Annalee Preus; one sister Harriet Roberts of Panama City, FL; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Vollie was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands Harry and John, one brother and four sisters.

A memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on May 12th at the First Lutheran Church in Hayward. A gathering of family and friends will take place for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Hayward.
