Verdie Belle Underwood DeLano Barnett

Verdie Belle Underwood DeLano Barnett, 97, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003.Mrs. Barnett was well-known and cherished for her wisdom, her candor and her enthusiasm for life. She loved her family, including her church family, and always served as a perfect example of the Christian spirit in the way she showed genuine concern for every person who touched her life and worked for many years as a caregiver. She enjoyed cooking and "having people over," and her coconut cake and chicken and dressing are legendary. She had a lovely voice and enjoyed singing. She was a good seamstress, making many beautiful clothes for her growing children. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and they all loved their "Mamaw." Mrs. Barnett, a resident at Mitchell-Hollingsworth Nursing Home, was loved and cared for by caregivers on Station 2, who enjoyed her ready smile and quick wit.Visitation will be Saturday, Oct. 18, from 10 a.m. to noon at Greenview Funeral Home in Florence. A funeral service will follow at noon in Greenview Memorial Chapel, with burial to follow in Stony Point Cemetery in Florence. Officiating will be Joe VanDyke, with Fred Dillon assisting.She is survived by daughters, Barbara Robison and Janet McIntyre and husband, Ralph, both of Florence; stepdaughters, Becky Turnbo and Shirley Allen, of Nashville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Marcia Newman, of Montgomery, Ala., Keith Eastep and Anna Gibson, of Florence,Letha Robison Anderson, of Monument, Colo., Holly Saint and Drew McIntyre, of Florence; step-grandchildren, Darlene Clendenon, of Fayetteville, Tenn., Kevin Turnbo, stationed in Iraq, Tina Allen Landers, of Waynesboro, Tenn., and Sheila Allen Wilson, of Cleveland, Tenn.; nine great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.Mrs. Barnett was preceded in death by husbands, Lowell T. DeLano, of Florence, and J.O. Barnett, of Waynesboro, Tenn.; and her daughter, Dorothy Eastep.Pallbearers will be Andy Anderson, Keith Eastep, Drew McIntyre, Don Saint, Jim Underwood and Ralph Wallace.Memorials may be made to the library at Magnolia Church of Christ or the Building Fund at Sherrod Avenue Church of Christ.
