Vada Shaw Brooks, 77, of Fredericksburg passed away early Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007.

She was born Vada Mae Tyler on May 10, 1930, in Birchwood, Tenn., to the late Calvin Lafayette Tyler and Ethel Hawkins Tyler. She was the sixth of nine children.

Mrs. Brooks is survived by two sons, M. Stephen Shaw and his wife, Kim, and Philip T. Shaw and his wife, Emily, all of Fredericksburg.

Grandchildren include Kimberley S. Ward and her husband, David, Zachary Shaw and Erin Shaw of Fredericksburg and Amy S. DeLong and her husband, Troy, of Richmond; and three great-grandchildren, Cullen Stapleton, Aiden Ward and Bryce Ward. Other survivors include two sisters, Viola Merica of Opelika, Ala., and Sabina Flournoy of Midland; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Myrtle Lettner, Vivian
McMeans, Hazel Halsey, Tanzie Harding; and her brothers, Calvin Zane Tyler and John Tyler.

Mrs. Brooks was employed for 38 years as an accounts clerk for the federal government, including jobs with the Commerce Department in Washington, D.C., with the Marine Corps at Quantico and the Navy in Arlington and Crystal City. After retiring in 1985, she enjoyed traveling to many places, including Hawaii, Alaska and the British Isles.

She was a charter member of Spotswood Baptist and Crossroads Baptist churches. She was a faithful servant for the Lord, having served many years as church secretary at both Spotswood and Crossroads churches, where she also taught Sunday school and volunteered on the kitchen committee.
A funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, with the Rev. R. Kenneth Brooks and the Rev. Mike Motsko officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, at the funeral home.
