TURNBAUGH Agnes Anne (Aggie) (Simpson) Turnbaugh, 89, former editor and co-publisher of the Jackson County Advocate newspaper in Grandview from 1953-2005, died Sunday, April 2, 2017, at her home in Lee's Summit, MO. Born Oct. 29, 1927, in Emporia, KS, to John and Agnes H. Simpson. She was a graduate of Southwest high school, and a 1949 graduated from Park College where she majored in speech and dramatics. Aggie had weekly column in the Advocate beginning with, "Shoppin' and Talkin'" and later, "Just Talkin' by A.A.T." She was co-publisher of the "Twilight Twister" pictorial history book on the 1957 tornado that devastated South Jackson County. Her involvement in civic activities through years in Grandview, Aggie was a past president of the Coronation of Our Lady School PTA, the G.F.W.C. Grandview Study Club, the Grandview Jaycee Wives, and was a member of the Grandview Bridge club. She served two terms as recording secretary of the G.F.W.C. Kansas City Athenaeum, was a former board member of the Salvation Army Booth Manor advisory board, member of the Grandview Chamber of Commerce board. She served on the Grandview Heritage Commission and for many years was a judge of the Harry's Hay Days parade event. She was appointed in 1985 by then Gov. John Ashcroft to a four year term as a Democratic member and board secretary of the K.C. Board of Election Commissioners, and was a member of the board of the Grandview unit of the American Cancer Society. She was a charter member of the Greater Kansas City Arabian Horse Association, as the family raised and showed Arabian Horses, locally, regionally and nationally. Preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, James D. Turnbaugh, Jr., in 2003 and her parents. Survivors include daughter, Annette M. Turnbaugh, Grandview; son, Joseph D. Turnbaugh, Milan, MO; grandson, Joseph L. Turnbaugh, her brother, John A. Simpson, Springfield, MO, and four great-grandchildren; her beloved caretaker niece, Valorie Simpson, nephews, Richard Simpson (Valorie), Martin Simpson, (Nancy), John Watt Simpson and Niece, Jennifer Ann Simpson; great nephew, Beau Simpson (Hannah), and great- great niece, Ava Jane Simpson, and her beloved cat, Miss Kitty. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 9, at Coronation of our Lady Catholic Church in Grandview and the funeral Mass will be at 12 p.m. Monday, April 10, at Coronation, 13000 Bennington Ave. Burial in Longview Memorial Gardens.
