Florence Linnea McPhee, 94, died peacefully surrounded by her family on November 6, 2011, at Cypress Cove Care Center in Crystal River.
She was born March 29, 1917, on the family wheat farm near Dunblane, Saskatchewan, Canada, to William and Helena Tuomi, who emigrated from
Finland.
Finnish was her first language. She learned English in order to attend school. Trixie, her trusted horse, pulled her by buggy the three miles to school in all types of weather. She graduated from St. Paul's Hospital School of Nursing, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in 1942 and became a Registered Nurse of the Province of Ontario in 1945.
She married James E. McPhee on November 16, 1942, in Saskatoon. They relocated to California, where she was known as a society woman of Palos Verdes.
Both survived a plane crash in the snowbound Nevada mountains in 1958. The harrowing experience of their crash was featured on the Art Linkletter television show. She became a U. S. citizen in 1962. She was an avid reader, who also enjoyed daily crossword puzzles, crocheting, golfing, bowling (242), flying and travel.
Florence was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; younger brothers, Archie and Dr. Harvey Tuomi; and grandson, Ryan McPhee.
Survivors include her three sons, W. Allan McPhee Esq. (Cindy) of Torrence, CA, and his daughters Meghan, Amanda and Alexis; Stuart McPhee (Dori) of Clermont, FL, and his daughter, Carly; and Dr. Robert McPhee (Betsy) of Crystal River, FL, and his son, James, and daughter, Nicole.
The McPhee family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to Cypress Cove Care Center for its years of dedication and loving care of their beloved mother and grandmother.
Private cremation arrangements are under the care of the National Cremation & Burial Society, Hudson, FL.
