Patricia Lee Curtis, 67, of Linton, passed away at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Born Feb. 22, 1934 in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Mitchell and Gaynell (Stutesman) Tumey. She was the deputy auditor and began working for the Greene County auditor's office in 1979. She was an active member of the Greene County Ladies Democrat Club. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Jim (Gaye) Morrison of Linton; Mrs. Ron (Dina) Bucci of Bloomington and Mrs. Pete (Amy) Sabino of Port Orange, Fla.; one son, Mike Curtis of Linton; nine grandchildren, Ryan Morrison; Tracy Morrison; Sarah Morrison; Adam Morrison all of Linton; Michael Bucci; Katie Bucci both of Bloomington; James Curtis of Tenn.; Jessica Sabino and Kristin Sabino both of Port Orange, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Curtis on Feb. 17, 1988, and by her parents. Funeral services will be held at the Welch and Cornett Linton Chapel at 11 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Myron Young officiating. Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Linton.

Pat Curtis passed away Tuesday. I knew she had been in failing health, but still the shock hit hard. I have known Pat since 1985 when I started out in this crazy business of news reporting. I would see her at the Greene County Auditor's office and later at the Linton City Council meetings. She served on the city council from 1988 until 1993. She always had a smile for me and would have to make sure I was behaving. That was a tough job for anyone. Curtis worked in the auditor's office from 1979 up until she had a heart attack on July 2. That heart attack resulted in her being Lifelined to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and having open heart surgery. She came home on July 10 but was Lifelined again on July 12. She remained in critical care at Methodist Hospital until her death. Greene County Auditor Sue McDonald has worked with Pat since 1983. "Pat and I were best friends, we ate lunch together everyday. It was rare for a weekend to go by that if I didn't see her, I talked to her on the phone," said McDonald. McDonald said that Pat was always at the office by 7:15 a.m. and was "rarely off work." "I always knew Pat was going to be there," said McDonald. McDonald knew that not only on a professional level but also a personal level. "I could count on Pat for anything. She was a friend for life. She was there for me when I lost my son and my husband." Pat, according to McDonald, knew the property transfers and was a great help to Kristin Harp when she started at the office. "She taught me a lot and I enjoyed working with her. She taught me everything I know," said Harp. But for Harp, Pat was more than just a co-worker. "She meant a lot to me. She was very generous, kind and always really good to me. I just really loved her," said Harp. Mary Jo Smith, who has been at the auditor's office since 1967, was working in that office when Pat started working there. "She and I always got along, we didn't have any differences. We worked together so long, she is almost like a part of my family...well, she was my work family," said Smith. "She was a very good friend." Pat was active in the Democrat Ladies Club and in Greene County politics. "She was a real worker who helped with anything. If it was a fundraiser or a democrat gig, you could always count on Pat to be there," said Linton Mayor Jimmie K. Wright. Wright worked closely with Pat and her husband John Curtis, who served as Linton clerk-treasurer until his death in 1988. He had known Pat since high school when she moved to Linton. Her father, Mitchell Tumey, was a manager at Murphy's Variety Store in Linton. "She was a year ahead of me. I knew her father," said Wright. "She has been a friend of mine for as long as I can remember, she is going to sorely missed." Wright described Pat as being "straightforward and willing to express herself." He also said that "she has left good kids in the area and we are fortunate to have them here." McDonald noted that Pat's death was going to leave a "big void in the office, we have all been such good friends over the years." But Pat won't be quickly forgotten by those who knew her. "Pat left her mark on the area, she was a good person, no doubt about that," said Wright. Several offices in the courthouse will be closed Friday, including the auditor's, recorder's, assessor's, surveyor's and treasurer's offices, so employees can attend Pat's funeral, which will be at 11 a.m. at Welch and Cornett Funeral Home in Linton.
