Mary Eliza was the daughter of Adolphus Fenton Tucker, Sr. (b. 1815 in Virginia) and Mary Eliza Ruffin (1818-1846). In 1867 she married Jacob Scudder Galloway, who had moved to Tennessee from his home state of New Jersey prior to the Civil War. (He subsequently served in the C.S.A. as a lieutenant.) Mary and Jacob S. Galloway had three children, Sallie Ruffin Galloway, Martha Rebecca Galloway, and John Coffee Galloway. Mary's husband Jacob was a lawyer and was serving as a city judge for Memphis when the Yellow Fever epidemic broke out in the city. Mary Eliza died from the disease, but he continued working -- the only judicial officer that remained at his post during the epidemic. Mary Eliza is buried in the Fowler Section, on the Southern half of lot 23 in Elmwood Cemetery -- a lot originally purchased by her grandfather, Major William Ruffin (1797-1857), one of the cemetery's original investors.
