Richard Lynn Truman, Sr. of Kansas City, MO passed away Saturday, May 14, 2016, at the age of 70. Visitation 6-8pm Thursday, May 19th and funeral service 10:30am Friday all held at the McGilley & Sheil Chapel. Burial following in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Rick was born in Joplin, MO, on June 21, 1945, but lived most of his life in Kansas City. He moved to Detroit as a child for a year when his father changed jobs. He attended the University of Missouri and then UMKC majoring in geology. He worked at many jobs including Hallmark Cards, Sears, and Macy's, but he found his niche in the fasteners business. He worked many years as a purchasing agent for Special-T-Metals and Infinity Fasteners, retiring in 1997.

Rick had an intense capacity for learning which never stopped. His interests ranged from music, arts, movies, and theater to space, ancient cultures, wildlife, and travel. He had a great desire to see the world that he had read so much about. His greatest goals were to see the Great Pyramids, the relics of ancient Egypt, and the Great Plains and Serengeti of Africa to see the animals he loved much in their natural habit. He also was interested in marine life and used his scuba certification to explore the under sea life and habitat of Mexico, Belize, The Great Barrier Reef of Australia, and Hawaii. He achieved these goals and many others in retirement. He and his wife were blessed to visit 61 different countries and all seven continents as well as the majority of the United States, including Alaska.

His love of animals led him to volunteer work at the Kansas City Zoo. He was at home there. He went out on Zoomobiles to visit elementary schools and nursing homes accompanied by lots of small animals and birds to share with his audience. He even volunteered to act as Santa for the zoo for two seasons. He was their first male docent in the 70's for several years then returned in 1997 at retirement and continued until his health would not permit. He was a regular donor at the Kansas City Community Blood Center where he was awarded recognition for being a 10-gallon donor.

He was the first male "Picture Lady" at St. Bernadette's elementary school where his children attended. He would borrow paintings from local institutions and share those with the classroom describing the techniques, color, and facts about the artist with the students. He was a "Youth Friend" in the Raytown School District and a member of the "Watch D.O.G.S." in the Lee's Summit School District where he mentored students of all ages. He was extremely active in Boy Scouts of America while his son was growing up and continued participating throughout the years to come. He held positions as Assistant Scout Master, Scout Master, District Training Coordinator, and Unit Commissioner. He and his son traveled to Philmont, NM (Boy Scout Heaven) and had a fantastic adventure together. He saw his son attain the rank of Eagle, and recently he had enjoyed watching his two youngest grandsons continue in the scouting tradition; one who just earned the rank of Webelo and the other will be awarded the rank of Eagle next year.

At 68, he decided he wanted to learn to play bridge. He started with lessons through the library and found a group at a Lee's Summit community center where he continued learning. While he was busy being an election judge he met a fellow judge with the same love of the game. She invited him to come to her community center which is located near 18th and Vine in Kansas City. There he found his "bridge home." He would want to thank them for their kindness but most of all for their great friendship.

He leaves behind to mourn his loss his beloved wife Dorothy of 50 years, his daughter Lori A. Christian and husband Russ, and his son Richard L. Truman, Jr. and husband Jerry D. Pope. He also is survived by five wonderful grandchildren Michael, Kaitlyn, and Tara Vining; Joseph "JT" Truman; and Ryan Christian.

Rick lived life to the fullest always seeking more knowledge.

He was taken too soon and will be greatly missed by his wife, daughter, son, grandchildren, extended family, and many, many friends. Rest in peace, Dad; you have earned it.
