James Elonzo (JE) Travland was born on September 30, 1927, in Taft, Texas, to Earnest Taylor and Cordelia Bates Travland.
After a long illness, he died on Thursday, April 4, 2013.
He moved to Pecos in 1941 when he was 14. He held a number of jobs at his young age: drove a bus from the Pecos Army Air Field to the Pyote Bomber Base, and drove a taxi. He proudly served in the US Army from December 1945 to February 1947. After being honorably discharged, JE returned to Pecos. He joined the US Postal Service in 1949. As a postal carrier for many years, he knew the address and PO Box of almost every resident in Pecos. In 1981, he was named Postmaster. After 37 years of faithful service, he retired in 1986.
He married Dorothy Bertino in Pecos in 1953, and they had two children, Paula McCoy and her husband John of Soldotna, Alaska, and Gregory Travland of Midland. Dorothy died in 1978. In 1984, JE married Catherine Ashley, who was the Reeves County Clerk at the time. He and Catherine spent many happy years renovating their home in Pecos, building a cabin in the Davis Mountains, and actively supporting the Pecos Rodeo, the Pecos Fall Fair, and the West of the Pecos Museum. They traveled several times to Alaska, Washington State, and Washington, DC.
He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. After he married Catherine, he accompanied her to the services at the First Baptist Church. JE lived in Pecos for over 70 years, until he and Catherine moved to Odessa in January 2012. He then moved to the Lamin, Lusk, Sanchez Texas State Veterans Home in Big Spring in June 2012 and lived there until his death.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting for rocks. He could repair almost anything around the house, made furniture, and worked with wood. He made many friends throughout his many years in Pecos and was always ready to help his friends and their families with their handy-man jobs.
JE Travland is survived by his loving wife, Catherine; brother, Eugene Travland and his wife, Barbara of Sequim, Washington; son, Gregory Travland and his wife, Jan; their two children, Tracee Poremba and her husband, Mike of Plano; and Jason Lindsey and his wife, Schondell of Odessa; daughter, Paula McCoy and her husband, John; grandson, James McCoy and his wife, Shannon and great-granddaughter, Madison Marie McCoy of Anchorage, Alaska; stepson, Victor Ashley and his wife, Peggy of Post; and stepdaughter, Kimberly Ashley of Tyler; and step-grandson, Clay Ashley and step-great-granddaughter, Reagan Ashley of Lubbock. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at 2:00 pm, at the Pecos Funeral Home Chapel, 607 W. 3rd Street, Pecos, Texas, with burial immediately following at Mount Evergreen Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer's Foundation, Parkinson Foundation, or West of the Pecos Museum in honor of JE Travland.
