Joseph was born about 1722 based on his age at death (he was in his 76th year), the son of John and Rebeckah Titus. He is presumed to have been born in Hopewell Twp., old Hunterdon (now Mercer) Co., NJ, where his parents resided.

He married first to Elizabeth (possibly Ketcham), who died in 1762. They had four known children. He married second to Pelatiah Moore by license dated 12 Nov. 1764, presumably in old Hunterdon Co., NJ. No children are certain from this marriage. He married, apparently fourth, to Martha Moore, who survived him.

Joseph lived in Hopewell Twp. near Titusville, where he is presumed to have died based on estate records. He was an elder of the Presbyterian Church of Hopewell (in Pennington), where he is buried.

He had at least six children according to the Cooleys, Genealogy of Early Settlers in Trenton and Ewing ... (1883), p. 271. Some of them whom are linked below.

It is not clear as to who the mother of the last two children was. Joseph's last wife Martha did not name any daughters in her will (at least according to the published abstract), and named four other female relatives or friends as her primary heirs. And Joseph's daughter Rebecca was born after the death of Joseph's second wife. So it would appear that Joseph had another wife, between Pelatiah and Martha.

Joseph's children were:

By first wife Elizabeth:
Hannah (abt 1746-1802), unmarried
Samuel (abt 1751/52-1825)
Joseph Jr. (1757-1823)
Uriel (1760-1834)

Mother uncertain:
Rebecca (1783-1849), married John Guild Hunt
Elizabeth, married Mr. Phillips
