Born on December 11, 1922, in Springfield, Illinois to James and Alice Layton, Alice attended Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Grade School and Sacred Heart Academy. After working at Illinois Bell as manager of food services, she married Virgil Everett Tipton, Jr. on May 31, 1958 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2008, joined by many family members, two members of the wedding party, and their wedding photographer.
In 1961, Virgil and Alice welcomed their first child into the family and within five years had three other children. Alice's devotion to her husband and children would become her defining vocation, one that was centered on a lifetime of good works achieved through the expression of her faith.
She was a member of the Springfield Right to Life, the St. Louise de Marillac Guild, the Altar and Rosary Society, and an auxiliary member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.
Mrs. Tipton is survived by her daughter Ann Ellen (husband, Steve) Richard; sons, Virgil (wife, Mary Beth) Tipton, Jim (wife, Magda) Tipton, Tom (wife, Beth) Tipton; 12 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Virgil.
Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
