Death: Mar. 24, 1938

According to the 1900 census, at age 19, William was working as an office clerk and living in the home of his father. He then worked as treasurer for CCC Fire Hose and Rubber Co., in Canton. He married Ella Frances Wattles, on August 3, 1906, in Canton, Massachusetts. Ella was the daughter of Arthur Sterry and Almira Kimball (Chapman) Wattles. She was a descendent of John Alden, said to be the first person from the Mayflower to set foot on Plymouth Rock. Growing up she was a member of the Footlight Club and acted in several of their productions. They were married at the First parish (Unitarian) Church at Canton, with Rev. Bradley Gilman of Canton and S.U. Sherman of Jamaica Plain officiating. They lived in the home of Arthur and Allie Wattles. Here she would give birth to their two sons, William Davis Jr., born August, 15, 1907 and two years later Benjamin Holt Ticknor.

In 1919, they moved to New York City, where William was director and officer with Commercial Solvents. He also was a partner in the banking firm of Goodrich-Lockhard Co., and president of Box Co. of America. He was director of Corn Products Refining Co., B.F. Goodrich Company, American Machine and Metals Inc. In 1928, he became President of Commercial Solvents Corporation and was chairman of the Board-of-directors until his death.

William was a member of the Metropolitan, the Racquet and Tennis, and Brookline Country Club. He enjoyed watching his sons play football at Harvard and followed them closely. He moved to Englewood, New Jersey. Slowly his health began to decline yet he continued to work at Commercial Solvents until March 24, 1938 when he died at his home, 56 Beech Road, he was 57 years old. Ella lived until August 29, 1963 and they are both buried at the family plot in Mount Auburn.
