Shelly Lyn Thurston Matthews, 39, of Great Falls, died of pancreatitis Friday, on her birthday, at her residence.
Her funeral is 11 a.m. today at Central Assembly of God Church, followed by a celebration of her life. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Croxford Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial of ashes will take place at a later date.
She is survived by her son, Pacer Shannon "PJ" Popham of Bozeman; her daughter, Shayla Jean Hunt of Helena; parents, Steve and Viki Thurston of Great Falls; sister and brother-in-law, Sharron and Ken Blanton of Helena, sister and brother-in-law, Amy and Zack Bond of California; brother and sister-in-law, Stephen and Kari Thurston of Great Falls and sister and brother-in-law, Alicia and Brent Jensen of Great Falls; grandparents, Ross and Gerry Thurston of Great Falls; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will all miss her beautiful smile and contagious laugh.
She was a bright and shining star that blazed through this life much too fast. A beautiful soul with a quick and warm smile, she touched the lives of many during her short time with us. A smile, a wink and then gone.
She was born Oct. 14, 1966, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and moved to Great Falls in 1971. She was a 1985 graduate of C.M. Russell High School and attended the College of Great Falls. She was a standout athlete and participated in a variety of sports during her years in school. She had many jobs, interests and hobbies, always moving on toward the next thing that caught her eye. Shelly loved her family in a way that only she could. She was a kind and loving soul.
Her greatest joy and love were her son, PJ, and daughter, Shayla. Shelly was a very proud and loving mother. Her children were the center of her universe. She never missed a chance to praise their achievements.
She was an avid volleyball and softball player for the Salvation Army and city leagues. She loved to play practical jokes and was always a good sport when the tables were turned. She loved chocolate, Oreos and cats.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Rae Thurston and Harry and Shirley Jeffery.
Memorials are suggested to the Cascade County Humane Society.
Cremated, Location of ashes is unknown.
