Gladys Virginia Barton, known to most as Virginia, departed this life at home in Leasburg, MO, surrounded by the love of her family on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, having reached the age of 71 years and 10 days.
Virginia was born in Richwoods, MO on April 17, 1939, the daughter of William Henry Thurmond and Blanche Thurmond nee Rogers. On November 24, 1956, she was united in marriage to James Robert Barton and nine children came to bless this union.
Virginia was a Christian of the Baptist faith. As a young woman, she was employed at Deb Shoe Company in St. Clair; but, when she began her family, raising and caring for her home and children became her priority in life.
Virginia enjoyed many pastimes and hobbies, including fishing, gardening and woodworking. She was also an avid reader and loved sewing and quilting. Many of her handmade items will be treasured family heirlooms for years to come. Playing the guitar and singing were other favorite pastimes.
Each of her children and grandchildren held a special place in her heart, just as she did in their hearts and many wonderful memories were created.
A devoted and loving mother, mother-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great and great-great-aunt, cousin and treasured friend, she will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
Virginia is survived by two sons, James Gary Barton and wife, Mary, of St. Clair, MO and Albert Terry Barton and wife, Darla, of Leasburg, MO; seven daughters, Nancy Ann Barton of Steelville, MO, Caroline Marie Barton and special friend, Robert Dunlap, of Cadet, MO, Norma Jean Ransom and husband, Anthony, of Steelville, MO, Louise Daisy Mae Barton of Leasburg, MO, Lavern Fay Barton of Leasburg, MO and special friend, Don Primeau of St. Charles, MO, Sandra Annette Bieseman of St. Clair, MO and Roberta Gail Immekus of Union, MO; her former son-in-law, John Bieseman of St. Clair, MO; four brothers, John E. Thurmond and wife, Shirley, of Sullivan, MO, and Raymond Leo Thurmond of St. Louis, MO, Carl Thurmond and wife, Laverne, of Potosi, MO and Willis Lester Thurmond and fiancee, Billie, of Potosi, MO; one sister, Shirley Butler and husband, Don, of Farmington, MO; 28 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews; great and great-great-nieces and nephews; cousins; other relatives and many friends.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, William and Blanche Thurmond; her husband, James Barton; four brothers, Louis Thurmond, Oscar Thurmond, Robert Thurmond and William Frank Thurmond; and three sisters, Nellie Heads, Arlene Thurmond, and infant, Alberta Thurmond.
Funeral services for Gladys Virginia Barton were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2010 at the Russell Colonial Funeral Home in St. Clair, MO, with the Rev. John Davis officiating. Interment was in the Horine Cemetery, Richwoods, MO.
