WALTON C. THOMPSON IS RUN DOWN BY AUTO

DIED IN MERIDIAN MONDAY FROM INJURIES.

While Enroute Home Friday Evening Struck by Auto, and Never Regained Consciousness.

FRIENDS here were shocked when the announcement came that Walton C. Thompson had died in Meridian, as a result of injuries sustained when he was run down by an automobile late Friday evening.

Reporting the deplorable accident, the Meridian Star of Tuesday, said "W. C. Thompson one of the best known printers in Meridian and long connected with the Dement Printing company, died Monday night at the Meridian Sanitarium, the result of in juries sustained last Friday afternoon when struck by an automobile driven by A. L. Flint, aged about 36, connected with the Emmons Brothers Mattress factory.

"The accident was reported to Chief of Police J. L. Hunnicut by Mr. Flint as having occurred at the intersection of Sixth and Seventh streets, near the Threefoot automobile establishment. No charge was made against Mr. Flint at the time, but he told the police chief, according to the latter, that he was ready to answer any charge that might be made against him if such was necessary.

Put Under Bond.

"Tuesday morning, upon learning that Mr. Thompson had died from the result of the accident Mr. Flint presented himself at police headquarters and was directed by Chief Hunnicutt to visit the office of Sheriff Martin, which he did and was placed under bond for his appearance at a preliminary bearing to be held later."

Mr. Thompson never regained consciousness enough to know anyone, after being hurt. His death was due probably from a blow on the head, sustained when his head came in contact with the pavement.

Funeral services were held at the home of the deceased in Meridian, Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. W. H. Lewis, pastor of one of the Methodist churches in Meridian, officiating, and the body, accompanied by his family, other relatives and several friends, was brought to Newton at 1 o'clock for burial. Interment was in the Knights of Pythias cemetery, about 1 :30 o'clock, where brief services were conducted by deceased's pastor, Mr. Lewis, who came with the funeral party, assisted by Rev. N. B. Harmon, of Newton.

The grave was literally covered with a beautiful collection of flowers, a token of esteem from numerous friends.

The Meridian Star of Tuesday also says :

"The funeral of W. C. Thompson, who died at the local hospital Monday evening, will be held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock from the residence, 1705 Seventeenth street, the Rev. W. H. Lewis officiating.

"The remains, accompanied by relatives, will be carried to Newton, at 11:45 o'clock where interment will be held.

"Paul bearers: Edward L. Henley, Tom Bennett, W. A. Adair, Carl Fikes, John Powell and F. F. Bledsoe."

"Deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary L. Thompson, two daughters, Mesdames C. P. Hamilton and Curtis Shoemaker, city; two sons, Louis and Everette Thompson; three sisters, Mrs. O. W. Clay, of York, Ala., Mesdames C. C.Johnson, and Ida Evans, city."

Native of Newton County.

Walton C. Thompson was a native of Newton county, born 48 years ago in the Poplar Springs community, and was well-known in Newton where he lived for a number of years. He was the first printer employed in The Record office twenty-two years ago, when this paper was established and when the composition was all done by hand. He worked for the Record a year or two and was a faithful employe. Later he went to Meridian and has been employed by the Dement Printing Co., since that time. Mr. Dement, the proprietor of that plant, came over to Newton with the body to attend the funeral.

Mr. Thompson married a daughter of W. D. Thompson, of this place. He was a member of the Methodist church and was an honorable and upright man. The Record extends sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

J. L. Hardy has purchased the W. C. Thompson place, consisting of fifty-three acres with residence thereon, and will move there with his family this week. Mr. Thompson in building another house in the southern portion of town and will occupy that as soon as completed.
