Annie Thompson was born on October 28, 1867 in Saintfield, County Down, Northern Ireland, to John Thompson and his second wife Margaret Jane Quinn (m. 1857), the daughter of Samuel Quinn of Millview, Saintfield.

Annie had three known half-siblings from her father's first marriage to Lydia Jane Lowry (m. 1843) - Howard Thompson, Harriet Thompson, and Mary Thompson (married William McCracken Wilson).

She had four known siblings, all born in Saintfield - Ellen Marie Thompson, born 1858 (died in 1865 at age 6 years); Maggie A. Thompson Ingold, born 1861; John A. Thompson, born 1863; and William G. Thompson, born 1869.

The year of Annie's immigration to the United States is thought to be 1884; her three surviving siblings - Maggie, John and William - immigrated to the United States as well. Their father John Thompson died in 1881 in Belfast and is buried in Saintfield, and their mother Margaret Jane Quinn Thompson died in Appleton, Wisconsin in 1908.

On April 25, 1888, Annie married William Thomas Brown, a carpenter, in New York City. William was born in 1863, the son of James Brown and Mary Woods, both immigrants from Ireland.

This couple had five children, of whom three survived to adulthood – Ann Marguerite Brown (1891-1966), Mary (May) Alice Brown Passage/Ranson (1893-1972), and William Irving Brown (1895-1972).

A son, James, was born in 1889 and died in 1899 at age 10. Another son was stillborn on December 2, 1901.

For reasons unknown, Annie left New York in 1913 and moved to Chicago, Illinois with the three children. Her brother John A. Thompson lived there with his family; he worked at the Alexander H. Revell & Co, a furniture retailer. The couple remained married, although it is not known how often Annie saw her husband. For reasons unknown, Annie was enumerated in the 1930 US Census as being in William's household in New York.

Annie's daughter May married Ira D. Passage in 1914, and after his death she married Ira Ranson in 1947. Annie's son William married Alice Ruth Walker in 1922. Her daughter Annie never married.

Per the 1920 US census, Annie lived with her three children and her daughter May's sons George William Passage and John Thompson Passage at 2501 Eastwood Avenue in Chicago. Annie worked as a salesperson at a department store, believed to be Carson, Pirie, Scott Department Store on State Street in downtown Chicago.

Annie's husband William Thomas Brown died in New York City in 1937.

Per the 1940 and 1950 US census for Illinois, Annie lived in an apartment at 1251 Thorndale in Chicago with her daughter Ann.

Annie died at age 83 at her apartment in Chicago on January 11, 1951. In her will dated May 18, 1942, Annie left her estate to her daughter Ann.

Several of her grandchildren remembered Annie as being very strict, prim and proper who never lost her Irish accent.

In New York City, Annie and William were members of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church. In Chicago, Annie belonged to the Fourth Presbyterian Church and to the Ravenswood Presbyterian Church.
